farewell Military Working Dog Chyba, and thank you!

Military working dog Chyba passed away from pancreatic cancer on Saturday July 30th, she was 12 years old. MWD Chyba lived a long and heroic life, completing multiple combat tours with the U.S. military. She was the inspiration behind the monument at the Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas, Ca. I’ll never forget having had the honor of meeting Chyba once before and tell her thank you for her service.

By: Stephanie Crock-KSTP

Major the police dog and his handler have another award to add to their growing collection.

Major was presented a Medal of Valor from the Minneapolis Canine Unit last night.

The Roseville K-9 was stabbed during a burglary back in November and lost the use of his hind legs.

Since then, officer John Jorgensen has helped get a law passed to increase the penalty for people who injure police dogs.

The award ceremony was part of the United States Police Canine Association’s police dog trials. The Minneapolis Police Department has 12 dog-teams competing.

Police K9 Demo Held in Wounded Soldier’s Honor

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Benjamin Seekell and Charlie, his military working dog, were wounded in Afghanistan. They both survived and are now recovering. Thanks to some Vietnam dog handlers, Staff Sergeant Seekell was able to take his mind off of his recovery for a while and enjoyed watching a local police K9 unit demonstrate their capabilities in honor of them. Glad to see both Staff Sgt. Seekell and his dog Charlie will recover.

Girl Gives Her Cash To Support Police Dogs

How great is this story from The Ledger? A 12 year old girl named Tori Lynn Wilson reads an article about a police dog that recently helped track down a criminal, and is now retiring. However, the department needs to raise money for a new police dog so she donates her own money to help make it happen as she felt inspired by the work police dogs do. Way to show K9 PRIDE for your local law enforcement K9 unit Tori!

(RICK RUNION | THE LEDGER) Lynn Wilson, 12, plays with Winter Haven police dog Dano at the Police Department on Friday Tori raised $301.00 for the department's K-9 unit.

Police dog retires: will be sniffing the breeze, rather than sniffing for drugs

EARL NEIKIRK/BRISTOL HERALD COURIER – Bristol Tennessee police officer Chesney Griffin and her K9, Auzia.

Congratulations to officer Auzia, a police dog, on her retirement! Her handler Chesney Griffin, a patrol officer and a K-9 handler at the Bristol Tennessee Police Department, will be able to adopt her. Officer Griffin says she would like to keep Auzia busy by taking Auzia on service calls to hospitals or other places “and just be a dog that can go in and visit with people and help her ease into retirement.” Article courtesy of of TricCities.com

R.I.P.: Roy, the Petaluma police dog

By RANDI ROSSMANN
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

Petaluma’s acclaimed police dog, Roy, died last weekend, leaving a legacy of city service and a reputation as an award-winning law enforcement canine.

The 14-year-old Belgian Malinois “retired” from service in January 2007 after eight years and continued living with his handler, Officer Paul Accornero.

PETALUMA POLICE DEPARTMENT
Petaluma’s acclaimed police dog, Roy, died last weekend.

The death has been a blow to officers, said Sgt. Mark Hunter, who supervises the department’s two dog teams.

“It’s a part of your family and it’s a co-worker,” Hunter said. “It’s a great loss for us all.”

The police department bought Roy in spring 1999 and Accornero trained him for narcotics work, patrol duty and countless good-will sessions at schools and community gatherings.

Roy was a friendly police ambassador but also a serious tracker of lost people, hiding suspects and stashed narcotics. Officers appreciated the extra protection he offered.

Hunter said Roy helped arrest more than 120 suspects and seize more than $313,000 in illegal drugs and $155,000 in drug money.

Roy also built an impressive reputation in police dog competitions. He earned 103 awards over the years, including several “Top Dog” awards at California competitions. He and Accornero won gold medals in the 2001 World Police and Fire Games in Indiana, the 2001 California Police Summer Games and the 2004 California Police Summer Games, Hunter said.

In his final year working for the department, Roy won the “Top Dog” award in the narcotics division in the 2006 trial season competition for the Western States Police Canine Association.

“He was not just known on a local level. He was very well known throughout the (law enforcement) canine community,” Hunter said.

Petaluma currently has two police dogs, Rico and Kilo. They are two of about 20 police dogs working in Sonoma County.
